Project management is the discipline of planning, organising and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives. It is often closely related to and sometimes conflated with Program management. A project is a finite endeavour – having specific start and completion dates – undertaken to meet particular goals and objectives usually to bring about beneficial change or added value. This finite characteristic of projects stands in contrast to processes or operations which are repetitive, permanent or semi-permanent functional work to produce products or services.
In practice, the management of these two systems is often found to be quite different, and as such requires the development of distinct technical skills and the adoption of separate management. The primary challenge of project management is to achieve all of the project goals and objectives while honouring the preconceived project constraints. Typical constraints are scope, time and budget. The secondary and more ambitious challenge is to optimise the allocation and integration of inputs necessary to meet pre-defined objectives. To succeed in this environment, you must be able to respond quickly to events as they occur. Inaccurate forecasts and outdated information can no longer drive transportation decisions. You need the ability to plan up to the very last minute. You need to manage shipments globally. You need to know what is happening at all times. In short, you need to optimise control.
From survey and planning, through optimisation to execution and reporting WELL has been able to build an enviable reputation in this market sector by taking the time at the outset of the project to fully and properly understand the key project objectives. Thereafter ensuring that optimum resources are placed at the disposal of our project managers enabling them to streamline decision making and reporting process whilst remove all unnecessary barriers to the overall success strategy. Our project reporting is flexible, easy to use, and structured to display all of the project data exactly the way the client wishes to receive it. The significant success enjoyed by WELL in the area of project management since inception is testament to the experience and dedication of our management team.
At WELL we are dedicated to delivering Customs compliant, multi-functional solutions that cover the wide range of Customs procedures and initiatives available to companies involved in duty management.
As we move increasingly towards global procurement, we face the complex issue of how the crossing of international boundaries may influence the economics of the supply chain. WELL is very experienced in managing simplified import declarations, Customs warehousing (bonded and excise), exporting, the New Computerised Transit System (NCTS), Single European Authorisations (SEA) and Intrastat reporting. WELL also offer solutions for companies operating the more specialist Customs procedures including Inward Processing Relief (IPR), Outward Processing Relief (OPR) and Processing under Customs Control (PCC).
At WELL we are pioneers in the area of Customs management and compliance processes and were one of the very first logistics companies in the UK to be accredited with Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status (Certificate No. GB/AEOF/00020/07). AEO is an accreditation scheme for businesses that can prove themselves to be trusted and compliant members of the international supply chain and therefore entitled to certain benefits. AEO is likely to become an internationally recognised quality mark for legitimate business. Applications are voluntary and in the UK HMRC are responsible for approving AEO applications, the status of which took effect throughout the EU on 1 January 2008.
A supply chain is the collective flow of goods, information and finance. It typically starts by the sourcing of raw materials or semi-finished goods, which are then transported into factories to be made into finished products. These then pass through warehouses, storage or distribution centres before being delivered to retailers, wholesalers or direct to consumers’ homes or business premises. The final stages involve the maintenance and repair, or the return and recycling, of products at the end of their life. Supply chain planning thus optimises overall flows and inventories, by balancing resources with demand at all stages.
Logistics costs average 25% or more of the total delivered product value and customer satisfaction is therefore of paramount importance to us. ‘Best practice’ supply chain management is critical to achieving competitive advantage and cost savings. The management of materials from source, through production to end user has, in many organisations, all too often evolved over time, rather than being specifically designed to meet the challenges of modern day business. As a result, supply chains are frequently characterised by dysfunctional practices, and the utilisation of multiple suppliers, with complex administration, a lack of true management information and an unreasonable dependency on individuals, rather than modern software packages designed for purposeful systems.
Addressing this important challenge, we vigorously continue to develop innovative services and industry leading information technology. This is designed to unlock the competitive potential of our clients and to establish best practice standards in total logistics management. The companies we have the privilege to represent are empowered to concentrate their precious time and resources on developing their own enterprises, without distraction.
